Why Candle Care Matters
A beautifully crafted lavender soy candle is an investment in your home and your well-being. With proper care, a quality soy candle can burn cleanly and fragrantly for 40–60+ hours. Without it, you might end up with tunneling, a weak scent throw, or a shortened burn life. The good news: candle care is simple once you know the basics.
The First Burn: The Most Important One
The very first time you light your lavender candle sets the stage for every burn after it. Here's why: soy wax has a "memory." If you extinguish the candle before the melt pool reaches the edges of the jar, the wax will continue to melt only to that diameter on future burns — creating a tunnel down the center of the candle.
The rule: On the first burn, allow the candle to burn until the entire surface is liquid wax from edge to edge. For most candles, this takes 2–4 hours. Never burn a new candle for less than 1 hour.
Trim Your Wick Every Time
Before each burn, trim your wick to 1/4 inch. This is the single most impactful thing you can do for your candle's performance. A properly trimmed wick:
- Produces a cleaner, steadier flame
- Reduces soot and black smoke
- Prevents the wick from "mushrooming" (forming a carbon ball at the tip)
- Extends the life of your candle
Use a wick trimmer, small scissors, or even your fingers to pinch off the excess wick. Remove any debris from the wax pool before lighting.
Burn Time Guidelines
- Minimum burn time: 1 hour per session (to prevent tunneling)
- Maximum burn time: 4 hours per session (to prevent overheating the jar and weakening the scent)
- Allow the candle to cool completely (at least 2 hours) before relighting
Maximizing Scent Throw
Soy candles are known for a clean, natural scent throw — but a few tricks can help you get the most fragrance from your lavender candle:
- Burn in a smaller room — the fragrance will concentrate more effectively in a bedroom or bathroom than in a large open space
- Keep windows and doors closed while burning to prevent the scent from dissipating
- Avoid drafts — air movement causes uneven burning and reduces scent throw
- Let the full melt pool form before moving the candle — this is when fragrance is released most strongly
Safe Candle Burning Practices
- Never leave a burning candle unattended
- Keep away from children, pets, and flammable materials
- Place on a heat-resistant surface
- Stop burning when 1/2 inch of wax remains — burning to the bottom can overheat the jar
- Never use water to extinguish a candle — use a snuffer or gently blow it out
Storing Your Candle
When not in use, store your lavender candle with its lid on (if it has one) in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV light can fade the color of the wax and degrade the fragrance over time. Soy candles are best used within 12–18 months of purchase for optimal scent.
What to Do with an Empty Jar
One of the joys of soy candles is the beautiful jar they come in. Once your candle is finished, clean out the remaining wax by placing the jar in the freezer for an hour — the wax will shrink and pop right out. Wash with warm soapy water and repurpose the jar as a succulent planter, a pen holder, or a storage container for small items.
